Origin

Malaysia’s official language; Bahasa Malaysia has always been borrowing foreign words to complement its inadequacies. In modern time, more words are borrowed from the English language.

‘Stim’ is actually a borrowed word from the English ‘Steam’. This unique word had been distorted from its original meaning to more diverse usage. Its growing complexity had made it one of the ‘most original uses of foreign word’ in the Bahasa Malaysia.

The use of the word ‘Stim’: More than Just Vaporized Water

Check out the various use of ‘Stim’:

To mean the exact English word Steam-Vaporized Water:
-E.g. -Penjanakuasa elektrik ini mengunakan kuasa Stim.
-Jangan bermain dengan Stim yang keluar dari cerek air tu.

To express anger:
-E.g. -Perangai babi kawan kau tu buat aku Stim je.
-Aku stim betul dengan polis tu. Tak pasal pasal kena saman.

To express indulgence:
-E.g. -Makwe aku stim semasa makan ais krim Baskin Robbin tadi.
-Aku sudah cukup stim dengan bir yang you beli tu.

To facially express satisfaction:
-E.g. -Aku nampak muka Stim dia masa kena urut awek tu tadi.

To Stim or not to Stim

Due to the complexity of the word ‘Stim’, it would be easily misinterpreted by anyone. So, if you plan to use the word ‘Stim’, here are some cautionary details you need to know:

- If you’re a male, please exclude someone’s wife, mother, daughter or girlfriend in your conversation when you’re using the word. …or.... Vice Versa. (E.g.: When you tell your friend “Bini lu Stim dengan Ais Krim I” to express his wife’s indulgence in the ice cream you brought for her)
- Refrain from using the word repetitively; unless you’re trying to figure out some problem with your wife or husband. (E.g.: “Aku Stim, Aku Stim, Aku Stim” is really annoying)
- Refrain from using it officially.
