It has been worn by generations of Sikh, Middle Eastern or certain Muslim in Muslim Majority area/countries.
Based on my research, turban are actually NOT COMPULSORY for MUSLIMS. So, I keep wondering what's the use of it. Well, the fact is... it is actually very useful in certain places. Not in HUMID, TROPICAL HOT and RAINY Malaysia though.
For the Sikh, it is part of the religion to wear Turban. Someone used to tell me that it is used to tie their long hair in. For the Sikh, when they die, God will pull them up to Heaven via their long hair(this is actually a myth unknown to me, sorry if i'm not entirely accurate on this). If this is right, Botak Chin is definitely in Hell. Yes, Prisoners would go to hell too.
It's actually perfectly fine for Sikh to wear it anytime and anywhere; because, their long hairs does indeed need to be tucked in. The best way to do it is to have a turban.

The Yellow Turban Rebellion (Quoted from Dynasty Warrior PS2 Game)
In here, I only theorize the practical uses of Turban (note: WITHOUT ANY RELIGIOUS IMPLICATION).
For it to be included as a daily headdress, there must be a reason for it to exist in the first place.
1
It is actually fashionable to wear Turban in the ancient time. That's what it's like for girls to wear skirt today. Men who wear Turban is seen as sexy and handsome back then. Hence, it was passed down for generations.
In the modern context, we would have said "COOL HAT, DUDE!!!".
2
It is actually very useful in fending off desert sand and protecting head from intense heat and strong sunlight. If you don't wear anything on your head in the desert, the sands will get trapped in your hair and slowly accumulate until you become sand monster.
3
It is actually a very good crash helmet for camel riding. Occasionally, camel rider get sleepy and doze off while they are on a camel, they fall. Turban help to protect their head from excessive impact on the ground.
4
Forget to bring your pillow on your camping trip??
Do Not Worry.
Just lay down on the ground with your Turban. It works just like a pillow.
5
Just like camels, it provide spaces for storage. Desert can be a deadly place if you forgot to bring food. During the ancient time, they would stuff Willy Wonka candybars, Gatorade, US dollars and MP3 Player into their turban while riding camel across the deserts.
6
Turban is also very very absorbent. Desert gets very little rainfall per year. So, when rain actually happen, it will be accumulated in the turban, and squeezed out for drinking purpose.
7
It's hard to received FM signal in the desert. Occasionally, when camel riders wants to listens to Hitz FM, they will plug the antenna of their portable radio on top of their turban (the highest point) to receive the signal.
